Why Should Players Care about Story in Video Games?
Video games are a unique medium that combine audio, visual, and interactive elements. This makes video games unlike any other media as a story-telling mechanism. But why do games need story in order to be enjoyable? And how can video games take advantage of their narrative capabilities? In this panel, we’ll take a look at some of the interesting ways that video games tell stories through interactivity and examine the role of video games as narrative devices. Each panelist will share some examples of story-telling done right and done wrong and give their personal dos and don’ts for video game story-telling.

The Delinquent Comic Art of Willy Harroff
Who Knows What Evil Lurks in the Hearts of Men (& Women)? I Do! I Do!

Ever wonder when parents first started NOT trusting their kids? The 1950s! Soon after the words “juvenile delinquency” were paired together, no child was spared! Suddenly comics, rock & roll, smoking and the birds & the bees were suspects. Comic book burnings literally swept the nation. Sound familiar?

This humorous, but informative talk would include an homage to the fantastic comic book artists and writers of the 1950s and 60s along with a stinging indictment against the self-appointed culture wars critic of the era, Dr. Fredric Wertham (think Dr. Phil). Wertham, author of Seduction of the Innocent, declared comics were responsible for juvenile delinquency and, unintentionally, brought the Comics Code Authority into practice, permanently whitewashing the quality out of mainstream comics.

In my own comics, I take Wertham’s quasi-scientific argument to the extreme. Wertham claimed horror and crime comics caused youth to go on delinquent, sometimes murderous, crime sprees and sexual romps. I apply Wertham’s bogus method of removing micro-sections of early comics for close inspection, morph them into beautiful quilt-like kaleidoscopic patterns and transform them into fresh funny images.

Wascally Wee Willy Harroff

Cosplay =/= Consent aka basic Con and Cosplay Ettiquette
The ‘Cosplay is not Consent’ movement actually reaches out a LOT further than just through being photographed without permission. It’s more of an anti-harassment movement, which can encompass anything from inappropriate gawking/glaring, which can make people feel very uncomfortable, to inappropriate and unwelcome touching or word exchange, which both men and women have been victim to.  Especially in the geek community where many of the people are too shy or afraid to speak up, or worried that by saying no, they’re going to cause an issue of some sort, even though they were just put in a position of feeling violated.  This is just a basic etiquette panel on, “just because you’re at a con, doesn’t mean all rules are out the window!” People still have feelings, there are still boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed just like on the street or in the office, and just because a costume is showing some skin….it’s not an excuse for inappropriate behavior.  Through a series of power point presentation and mini-skits, we’ll go over some do’s and don’ts during certain situations that may and will come up during your convention experience.

Teaching with Pop Culture
Did you ever go to class and it was the most boring thing you had ever experienced and the birds outside provided more entertainment. I have. So what did I do, when I teach I use as much popular culture as possible. Have you ever watched Firefly as part of your course or had Netflix as your required textbook. That is the way I teach. If you are an instructor and love popular culture and don't think you can use it in class, any class, think again. Pick this panel and let me show you how. Let me give you some suggests and let others help you along. You can use anything from Duck Dynasty to The Hunger Games Trilogoy to the new Marvel heroine Kamala Khan.

Beginners Guide to Cosplay Sewing
Been dying to get into Cosplay, but you’ve never sewed a stitch in your life and don’t know where to start? Got a few costumes under your belt but you need some tips and tricks to take your work to the next level? Join costumer and seamstress Rose Hipps as she walks you through some essential costuming information for beginners, such as:

Taking your measurements – the foundation of any well fitted garment. Lots of people struggle with altering clothing or patterns to fit them properly. Having accurate measurements can speed up the process and help you get the best results every time, right from the beginning of the project, and is also very important when purchasing or commissioning items from other crafters.

Learn to analyze source material to look for material clues as well as identify basic garment shapes.
Is that shiny bit in your research image satin or pvc? Is that a circle skirt? or is it gored? pleated or gathered? Learning to see these shapes can speed the process when developing your patterns and help you avoid wasted materials.

Get some basic sewing tips on fitting, fasteners and finishing.
These three things can make your break your costume and are often the ones beginner costumers struggle with the most. Learn tricks to fit the garment to your body with or  without a helper, learn to plan head for fastening and gets tips on how to apply zippers, hooks and snaps properly and how to make your garments look just as great on the inside as the outside.

Learn to use your google-fu and walk away with a master resource list to get you started on your next project.
The internet is a wonderful resource for beginners, with a wealth of suppliers, tutorials and other information which can sometimes seem overwhelming. We’ll cover favorite resources for a variety of areas such as armour, historical garments, corsetry and supplies.
